Our space is warm, welcoming, and thoughtfully designed, with high‑quality, stimulating resources that support early learning. Above all, it matters to us that each baby is happy, settled, and thriving.
As soon as children begin taking their first confident steps and showing a growing curiosity about the world around them, they transition into the toddler room. This next stage of their journey offers more space, more challenge, and greater access to age‑appropriate resources that encourage exploration. Here, the focus shifts toward developing independence and social skills, supported by planned activities that build on your child’s emerging interests. Their day may be filled with endless opportunities for discovery—constructing towers, engaging in role play, painting, listening to stories, or singing favourite songs.
Two Year Funding
Some 2 year-olds are eligible for 15 hours free childcare a week. For more information, check out out Funding section
Two Year Integrated Review
The two‑year check is often referred to in nurseries as the Integrated Review.
The Integrated Review brings together parents, children, your child’s key person, and the Community Nursery Nurse or Health Visitor. It combines the Early Years Foundation Stage Two‑Year Check with the Healthy Child Review to create one holistic assessment.
This review looks at your child’s growth and development, including learning progress, care routines, sleep patterns, toilet training, and sources of parenting advice and support.
It also provides a valuable opportunity for you to raise any concerns or questions you may have about your child’s wellbeing or development.
Preschool
The pre‑school room is a rich play‑and‑learning environment designed to inspire children and give them opportunities to develop holistically alongside their peers. We place strong emphasis on language and interaction, encouraging children to talk, share ideas, and express themselves in our language‑rich setting. All areas of learning are woven into daily activities, and social skills grow naturally as children learn to take turns, share, and understand what is right and wrong.
Pre‑school is an important stage for preparing children for school—building independence, strengthening existing friendships, and forming new ones. Your child will discover a love of learning through thoughtfully created areas that spark imagination and support development. At First Steps, we enhance our environment using The Curiosity Approach, as we believe curiosity is at the heart of all learning.
A room full of hands‑on, exploratory experiences awaits your child: opportunities to tell and listen to stories, practise early writing skills to develop pencil control, and access resources that support numeracy—counting, grouping, matching, and sorting. Outdoors, children can explore exciting investigative areas, mud kitchens, equipment that builds physical skills, and a natural environment that encourages curiosity about the world around them.
Three and Four Year Funding
All three and four year old children are entitled to a free part-time early years place at a nursery or pre-school before they reach school age. This entitlement not only helps towards the cost of childcare but it also enables children to start to learn and play with other children in a fun, safe and structured environment.

Breakfast, Afterschool and Holiday Clubs
The out‑of‑school club has been established at RL Hughes for five years, supported by a dedicated team of staff who all hold relevant childcare qualifications. Every team member takes part in ongoing professional development to ensure they remain up to date with current policies, procedures, and changes in legislation. Our very low staff turnover provides children with consistency and stability.
Activities are planned around each child’s individual needs and interests, with children taking the lead and staff offering support where needed. Children also have free access to a wide range of engaging resources.
Outdoor play is an important part of our provision, and children are encouraged to enjoy the safe, well‑equipped outdoor area.
The out‑of‑school club benefits from access to a variety of school facilities, including the extensive outdoor play spaces and the indoor gym. We also use iPads to support children with communication difficulties, alongside other methods already familiar to them from school.
We offer breakfast clubs, after‑school clubs, and holiday clubs throughout all school holidays, with the exception of the Christmas break.

£31.00 per day 7.30am-6.00pm
£19.00 half day 7.30am-12.30pm or 1.00pm-6.00pm
£23.00 short day 9am - 3pm
